LAST UPDATED: June 17, 2020, 4:30 p.m. EDT: Robot maker company Boston Dynamics will sell its spot robot for $ 74500. Recently, they have put their own Spot Robot for sale to any business across the united states for $74500 only. Boston Dynamics listed their Spot robot on shop.bostondynamics.com and asked people to buy if interested. Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 to make robots. Boston was fielding questions like when they will put their robots on sale and what will be the price for so long. Boston always ignored these questions as they took nearly a quarter of a century to make the world’s best mobile robot.

The price of the Spot robot is $74,500 which is equivalent to the luxury Tesla Model S. Boston Dynamics defended its price saying “it is the world’s most nimble and advanced mobile robot that can do everything whatever its owner wants.” Although, spot robots give services in surveying and data collection only.  It also has been used in creating 3D maps on construction sites, hunts for machine faults in offshore oil rigs, and controversially in the police bomb squad too.

Spot Robot First look by Boston Dynamics

See the amazing features of Spot robot in the above official video released by Boston Dynamics, especially from 0.19 to 0.21. Here, spot is walking like a real spider with perfection without getting tripped up. It was faster than human speed.

Spot robot includes the robot, two batteries, the battery charger, a robot case, the tablet controller, a power case, and Python client packages for Spot APIs. Boston Dynamics said they will keep providing software updates in the future. Boston Dynamics is also planning to sell Spot payloads. Company is offering free shipping in 6-8 weeks to any destination across the united states. Company is also planning to expand spot sales internationally this year.

We plan to manufacture around a thousand Spots in the next year but can increase that based on the demand,” a Boston Dynamics spokesperson told VentureBeat. “We are exploring opportunities for enabling sales overseas this year– Boston Dynamics.

Spot robots can do anything that a human does. Spot can go anywhere and works smoothly in harsh conditions too. Boston initially planned to produce 1000 spot robots before mid-2020. But it became impossible due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Boston also leased 150 spot robots from last year to different industries.

The spot robot sale will be a limited sale where every businessman can buy only 2 spot robots. If someone wants more than this quantity,  then Boston dynamics have two other price tiers: Academic (criteria: discount for accredited educational institutions) and Enterprise (more sensors, communications infrastructure, software integration, and robot fleet management).

Spot robot enjoys a celebrity figure in the robotic industry. It can be customized with different sensors and programmed to perform patrols and inspections. Customers will be able to take a test drive of Spot robot before actually buying it. For this, company has given one demo version of the Spot robot that will be used to give a test demo to potential buyers. This will let potential customers see a demo work of the spot robot before purchasing it.

Boston Dynamics’ vice president of business development, Michael Perry Said:

Some of the customers we’re speaking to are in the ‘shut up and take my money’ mode,” But others say, ‘I’m interested in Spot, but I want to come to your lab and drive a robot or for you to come visit me

Spot add-ons and payloads

Spot robot is made with a view to make it usable where other robots are not. Thanks to spot add-ons that give plenty of several new features to Boston’s spot robot. Spot can be configured to go to the places where human interaction is risky and a threat to security. Boston Dynamics is selling the add on listed below:

  • Spot charger: $1,650
  • Spot battery: $4,620
  • Spot CAM, color panoramic view and communication capabilities: $21,800
  • Spot CAM+, a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera for detailed inspection: $29,750
  • Spot EAP, lidar: $18,450
  • Spot GXP, regulated power, and Ethernet port: $1,275
  • Spot Core, edge CPU for dedicated processing of on-robot computation: $3,925
  • Spot EAP+, lidar with Spot CAM: $34,570
  • Spot Core AI, edge GPU for advanced processing of on-robot computation: $24,500
  • One year of extended coverage and expedited repair for $15,000 is also being offered by Boston Dynamics.

SPOT IS AN AMAZING ROBOT, BUT IS NOT CERTIFIED SAFE FOR IN-HOME USE OR INTENDED FOR USE NEAR CHILDREN OR OTHERS WHO MAY NOT APPRECIATE THE HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH ITS OPERATION.

Boston dynamics is fairly explicit that they don’t want people to use this robot at home just for fun, so they are granting license for commercial use only.
